It feels very much like Autumn in crystal form, with its deep yellow colour and a drizzle of the richest red, and whichever way you look at it, it’s completely different each time. I also love that you can pick which part is the front, so if you don’t want too much red, you can pivot it a little, or if you want the dramatic look, you can pick that, too!

A sphere has no front, no back and no correct way up, which means there is no way to get it wrong and no way to settle it either. Put it on a shelf, come back a week later having nudged it while dusting, and there it’s showing something else entirely.

Mookaite only comes from a stretch of ground in Western Australia, out along Mooka Creek, and not one other place on the planet has ever produced it. Every piece anywhere, in every shop and every collection, traces back to the same ground. Somebody then took a rough chunk of it, cut it down and ground it into a perfect ball with no idea where the red bands would end up until the shaping was nearly finished, which is a rather lovely gamble to have paid off this well.

It measures 4.5cm, small enough to sit comfortably in your palm and solid enough to feel properly weighty, and there is only this one. The stand in the photographs is also included, so you can display your sphere as soon as it arrives.
