Amethyst is probably the most famous crystal there is, and somehow the story behind her name is still the best bit, as it comes from the ancient Greek word amethystos, meaning something close to “not drunk”, because the Greeks were convinced she kept a clear head, and they carved their wine goblets out of her just to be on the safe side. The crystal world’s biggest celebrity is essentially named after avoiding a hangover, and I refuse to stop finding that fabulous.

Even though there’s so much to Amethyst, that clear head is still what she does best, though. This is the stone for busy minds that won’t switch off, the one people keep on nightstands and tuck under pillows for restful sleep and softer dreams, which makes a moon just about the perfect shape, because if any crystal was born for the night shift, it’s Amethyst.
